Tưởng niệm Giáo sư Kapila Abhyawansa: Người cầm đuốc nghiên cứu Phật học

Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kapila Abhyawansa (1938-2024), một học giả, nhà nghiên cứu Phật học uyên thâm đến từ Sri Lanka, người đã dành hơn sáu thập kỷ cho các nghiên cứu Phật học tại quê nhà và nước ngoài.

Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kapila Abhyawansa đã thanh thản trút hơi thở xả báo thân, từ giã trần gian vào sáng hôm thứ Bảy ngày 31 tháng 8 năm 2024 (28/7/Giáp Thìn), tại Học viện Phật giáo Quốc tế (IBC), Thái Lan, Hưởng thọ 86 xuân.

Nguyên Phó Hiệu trưởng phụ trách đào tạo, Trưởng khoa Tôn giáo học và là giáo sư chính thức tại Học viện Phật giáo Quốc tế (IBC), Thái Lan.

Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kapila Abhyawansa, Giáo sư lỗi lạc tại IBC, người có những cống hiến đặc biệt cho nền giáo dục Phật giáo và cộng đồng, người đã để lại dấu ấn khó phai mờ đối với tất cả những ai có vinh dự được gặp gỡ và học hỏi từ ông.

Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kapila Abhyawansa chuyên về ngôn ngữ Pāli, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Triết học Phật giáo, Luật tạng, và cả Triết học phương Tây và Ấn Độ đặc trưng.

Giáo sư Kapila Abhyawansa là một trong số ít những giảng viên Phật học không chỉ làm phong phú thêm các ý nghĩa nghiên cứu Phật học, trong thế giới học thuật thông qua các tác phẩm của ông, còn phản ảnh giáo dục Phật giáo vào thực hành Phật pháp, những lời dạy quý báu của đức Phật.

Trong việc phụng sự Tam bảo Phật, Pháp, Tăng như một thiên chức trọn đời, Giáo sư Kapila Abhyawansa đã làm phong phú thêm về sở học cho nhiều sinh viên, và đồng nghiệp cho đến khi ông thanh thản trút hơi thở, xả báo thân về cõi Phật vào năm nay.

Giáo sư Kapila Abhyawansa nổi tiếng với chuyên môn về triết học Ấn Độ và phương Tây, cũng như chuyên môn về các ngôn ngữ kinh điển Phật giáo: Pāli, Phạn và Sinhala.

Tuổi thanh xuân, ông đã quan tâm đến Ấn Độ học, ngữ văn và các ngôn ngữ kinh điển Phật giáo thiêng liêng. Năm 1967, ông đã tốt nghiệp học vị Cử nhân Phạn ngữ với danh hiệu hạng nhất từ Đại học Peradeniya ở Sri Lanka. Năm 1972, ông hoàn thiện Chương trình cao học Thạc sĩ Triết học từ Đại học Banaras Hindu ở Ấn Độ. Ông trở về quê nhà Sri Lanka và hoàn thành chương trình nghiên cứu học vị Tiến sĩ vào năm 1992 tại Viện Sau đại học về Pali và Nghiên cứu Phật giáo tại Đại học Kelaniya.

Luận án Tiến sĩ của ông với chủ đề: “Lý thuyết về tri thức của Emmanuel Kant - Một nghiên cứu so sánh với lý thuyết so sánh về tri thức của Phật giáo, Theory of Knowledge of Emmanuel Kant-A Comparative Study with Buddhist Theory of Knowledge” được công bố vào năm 1997.

Trong những năm tháng còn là sinh viên, nghiên cứu sinh Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kapila Abhyawansa, bắt đầu nghiên cứu triết học Phật giáo và diễn dịch các văn bản Phật giáo. Trong thời gian đó, năm 1962 ông đã xuất bản một bài đánh giá về Tác phẩm kinh điển về ngữ pháp tiếng Sinhala, Sidat Sangarā.

Sau các lễ tốt nghiệp nêu trên, hơn 60 năm tiếp theo của cuộc đời nghiên cứu học thuật, ông đã xuất bản 15 cuốn sách và hơn 100 bài báo khoa học trên các nền tảng ở Sri Lanka và nước ngoài. Trong số 15 cuốn sách này, những cuốn sách và bản dịch đầy hy vọng của ông bao gồm:
